Camp Updates

Well, I said I would post today about the kids… but that didn’t happen as planned.  Fred was prepared to work with the kids last night after dinner but the children were not there.  They were playing late after school and didn’t leave in time to get back for dinner.  So we gave them a time to be home today and hopefully we will have pictures and an update on the orphans for you tomorrow.

Today was very much like yesterday.  The eye team distributed several glasses again and the work team cleared more land.  An early rise at 5am has everyone pretty tired after a long days work.

Back at camp, Jako and Ryan began cutting the beams for the roof on Alyssa’s house.  This was a 2 person job that they wanted to get completed so that the team can get going on the roof once we are finished in the fields.

Amber and Karen organized the baby items and medication the team brought with them (from donations we received) for the orphanage today.  Well, Karen spent most of her time running around after Jakob while Amber organized, but once Jakob went down for his nap they were able to work together.  Once finished, Candi, Karen and Amber took these items to the orphanage for distribution.  The house mothers were very excited to receive the baby items and some additional medication for the kids.

As you can see, Amber is feeling better today.  She is not 100% yet, but much better.  Thank you for your prayers and please continue to pray for her to have complete recovery.  While I am on the topic, Noah came down with something over the evening and woke up not feeling well.  He did not go out with the team today and stayed back to rest.  He had a 101 temperature and spent some time sleeping in the house.  Mama Karen and Mama Amber made him homemade chicken noodle soup (Amber is an incredible cook in the bush), hot tea and honey and some crackers which helped him feel much better.  After a shower and some flu medicine, he is feeling much better.  But please keep him in your prayers as well.  He is still not 100% either and we want him to feel better soon!

Last request, please remember to keep Alyssa in your prayers as well.  Her back is doing well, but by the end of the day, she is tired and worn out because she can’t do as much as she normally can. She is not allowed to lift heavy things and she is limited to how much she can bend over.  So pray for a speedy recovery there also!

For those who are familiar, Amber and Jako have a person that manages their camp named Charles.  He is a wonderful man that has the most humble nature, speaks wonderful English and enjoys spending time with the team while we are here.  He often translates in the eye ministry for us.  Last year, we filled the footers for Charles house, which was soon to be constructed near Amber and Jako’s home.  Since then, they have completed the house!

Charles now has a comfortable brick home for him and his family.  He also has been given a field nearby to produce his crops.  Once the corn crops are produced, he harvests and sells the “maize” to distributers that drive into the bush to purchase from farmers.  The crops that are produced are kept in holding areas.  It stays in this “storage” or holding area until it can be taken off the husk and stored in bags for transport.

Hopefully we will be back to report more tomorrow about the children as planned.  Please continue to pray for the team.  With Amber being sick and now Noah, there is something going around.  We pray that it will be removed from the campsite so that everyone is feeling much better and we can accomplish everything God would want us to on this mission!

Ben’s parents – love you and miss you.  I am doing well!  Samantha (from Ben too) – I won’t end up on “I shouldn’t be alive” or “I’m dead” and I’ll try not to do anything too idiotic.  I hope that doesn’t include climbing a tree without any safety equipment to rip it down :) I miss you and will see you soon.

Denise – Kerry and Ethan say I love you and miss you!  See you soon!  Have fun with the house to yourself while we are gone!

More to report tomorrow.  See you next post…

  3. I struggled to post a comment from my phone, so I will try again! I will be praying for everyones health and that this illness will not continue to spread. It seems like such a blessing to have wonderful cooks there to sooth the pains from the sickness. Feel better soon, Noah! I love and miss you.

  4. Greetings Everyone. It's been great hearing your stories and seeing the pictures. I must admit that when we prayed/sent you off this time last week I was a bit envious. It was obvious God was about to do a marvelous work among and through you! Thanks for availing yourself to Him in such a meaningful way. Praying for you, Erik Wilkins

  5. Happy to hear that Amber is feeling better, but sorry that Noah is not feeling so good. We'll continue to pray for healing for the whole team. From the pictures it looks as though the camp is coming along nicely, and it sounds like the team is working together like a finely tuned machine! Can't wait to hear from you guys tomorrow! Love, Stef

  6. HEY ALL YOU HARD-WORKING FOLKS--

LIKE ERIK SAID, I'M ALSO ENVIOUS THAT I CAN'T BE OVER THERE HELPING. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER (YOU KNOW, RIGHT BEFORE THE DINOSAURS DIED) MY CHURCH DIDN'T SEND FOLKS ON MISSION TRIPS BUT WE HAD LOTS OF WEEKEND RETREATS. NOT THE SAME.

I'M PROUD OF EVERY ONE OF YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DO THIS. KAREN, YOUR DAD LEFT BIG SHOES TO BE FILLED BUT I KNOW YOU ARE DOING GREAT!

I'M PRAYING EVERYBODY THAT HAS SOMETHING GOING ON IN THEIR BODIES WILL SOON BE BACK TO NORMAL--THAT DOESN'T INCLUDE AMBER. WHAT SHE HAS GOING ON IN HER BODY WILL WORK ITSELF OUT IN A FEW MORE MONTHS. (I WROTE THAT TO BE FUNNY, I HOPE YOU READ IT AS BEING FUNNY.)

OH, BUT CRITICISM...OR COMMENT...OR SOMETHING. COULD YOU IDENTIFY THE FOLKS IN THE PICTURES? I'M NOT ABLE TO SEE WHO THEY ARE BEHIND THEIR MASKS, ETC. THANKS.

    LINDA PAULES
